By Grace, Through Faith

A Study Through the Book of Romans

The book of Romans, such a beautiful book and much quoted. For good reason! The Book of Romans has within in it the gift of salvation as well as the way in which he should walk to please the Lord.

If you have been following along with me as we studied last year, you will be amazed at how the stories that we have read lead very well into this one.

Romans was written by the Apostle Paul, while he was in Corinth gathering the funds that were to go to the Christians in Jerusalem, around AD 55-58.

This book is considered one of the most theological of the 13 letters that Paul wrote in the Bible. How blessed are we to have such a gift from our Father!?

I am so excited to jump into this amazing book.

“Martin Luther was studying Romans when he concluded that a person becomes righteous in the sight of God through faith alone. His discovery led to the Reformation battle cry, sola fide, “by faith alone.”

Charles L. Quarles, “Romans, Letter to The,” ed. Chad Brand et al., Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2003), 1409.

The overarching theme to the book of Romans is “the righteousness of God.” Many define this differently, but the jest is that “rightousness” is a quality that God possess.

“This righteousness is expressed both in His just condemnation of sinners and in His declaring and then actually making believers righteous.”

~Charles L. Quarles, “Romans, Letter to The,” ed. Chad Brand et al., Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2003), 1411.

Here are some of the Topics that will be covered in the book, this is a list from Logos Factbook, I just love this resource. There is a free version if you would like to check it out. (logos.com)

• obedience and self-sacrificial love (12:1–15:13).

Here is an outline of what will be covered within the Book of Romans.

And I thought it would be good for us to have an outline of the book. Here is the basic outline, but this can also be broken down into smaller outline points as well.

  1. Introductions (1:1-17)
  2. God’s Righteousness Revealed in Condemnation (1:18-3:20)
  3. God’s Righteousness Revealed in Justification (3:21-5:21)
  4. God’s Righteousness Revealed in Sanctification (6-8)
  5. God’s Righteousness Revealed in Sovereign Choice (9-11)
  6. God’s Righteousness Revealed in Transformed Living (12:1-15:13)
  7. Concluding Remarks (15:4-16:27)

We are all sinners, everyone. And we need a Savior. This book shares the gospel. It is my hope that as we study and learn, our eyes will be open to this beautiful gospel and we will teach it to ourselves again and again. It is not by our own might or merit that we are saved, but by God our Father.
